The Best Things About Term Deposits

Thanks for coming back to visit.

What many investors want when it comes to investing their money is security. Some people are good at managing risk and of course, if you have heaps of cash you don’t mind losing some of it, but if you don’t have much, you want to know that it won’t all be gone by the time you turn around twice. This is why many small investors turn to term deposits, especially over the last year or two when the financial climate seemed so unstable. So how come term deposits are more stable than other types of investments? For a start, only Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions (ADI) are allowed to offer term deposits. This means that term deposits are amongst the savings products that are actually backed by the government under what is called the Financial Claims Scheme. This protection is free of charge to the consumer and applies to all amounts up to $1 million. If you were lucky enough to have a term deposit over that amount then there is another safe back up that you would be eligible for. You would need to contact your ADI to get the specific details. Another good thing about term deposits is that the interest rate is not variable like it is on other types of savings accounts. So if the interest rates fall, your term deposit rate won’t - until maturity, anyway. There are also many different time frames for term deposits. You can choose one as short as 7 days or up to three years or more. So if you have a large amount of money for something like buying a home, you can actually put it in a short term deposit while you are waiting for the transaction to go through, making your money work for you better and harder, which is what investing is all about, after all.
